WeChat Pay for Foreigners in China (2026 Guide)

WeChat combines messaging, local services, and payments. Set it up before you fly so that a passport, bank-card, or SMS mismatch does not become a checkout problem after arrival.

WeChat Pay can serve as a useful second mobile wallet in China.

Prepare the account, passport, phone, and card

Download or update the official WeChat app. WeChat says an international phone number is acceptable if it can receive verification SMS messages; a mainland-China +86 number is not required for this setup. Turn on a secure unlock method before adding payment information.

  • A valid foreign passport
  • An overseas phone number that will remain active during the trip
  • An eligible international debit or credit card
  • The full name, country or region, and mobile number held by the card issuer

Find Weixin Pay and start the official setup

The current official route is Me → Pay and Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card. Read the agreement shown in the app, fill in the requested identity information, then follow the card-linking prompts.

If WeChat Pay passport verification fails

A foreign passport is an officially supported identity document for this visitor setup. Treat a rejection as an identity-data issue first, rather than assuming the international card is the cause. Select Passport, enter the full name exactly as shown on the passport and in the bank or card-issuer record—including middle names, capitalization, spaces, and punctuation—and recheck the country or region, passport number, and any expiry field shown.

If WeChat requests documents, its official guide requires a passport copy and the service may request further identity evidence. As a practical capture check—not a published WeChat error-code list—photograph the complete color identity page with all four corners visible and no crop, blur, glare, shadow, filter, or covered text. If a live face check appears, remove hats or tinted glasses, use even front lighting, and keep the face inside the guide frame. Submit identity images only inside the official WeChat flow, never through a chat or unofficial support account.

  1. Update the official WeChat app, open the mainland-China wallet path shown in your account, and choose Passport as the document type.
  2. Match the passport and bank record exactly; do not remove a middle name or keep guessing different name orders.
  3. Re-enter the country code and use the mobile number registered with the bank or card issuer; confirm it can receive the verification SMS.
  4. Retake the passport image in bright, even light and complete any live face check without filters or obstructions.
  5. If identity verification succeeds but card linking fails, contact the card issuer about its verification or international online-payment decision.
  6. If WeChat reports an identity conflict, account restriction, or asks for more KYC evidence, use in-app Help, call 95017 in mainland China, or +86 571 95017 from outside mainland China. Do not cancel the account as a shortcut: cancellation also closes its linked payment account and is not a fix for mismatched identity data.

Add an international card and separate issuer failure from identity failure

In Wallet, choose Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card. Enter the card number, full name exactly as held by the bank, passport details, country or region, and the mobile number registered with the issuer. Complete the SMS or issuer verification shown.

  • If the SMS does not arrive, recheck the country code and issuer-registered number before requesting another code
  • If the passport passes but the card is declined, ask the issuer whether international online or e-commerce payments and its authentication step are enabled
  • If a billing address is requested, use the address held by the card issuer rather than a hotel address in China
  • Confirm that the first attempt failed before trying a second eligible card; repeated submissions can hide the original cause

Pay at a merchant: scan or show your code

International cards linked to Weixin Pay are intended for eligible everyday merchant purchases in mainland China, including dining, transport, shopping, hotels, and other participating services. Merchant acceptance and issuer approval still control each transaction.

  • Scan: use the app’s scan function on the merchant’s official checkout code, enter an amount only when the merchant flow requests it, then verify the merchant name and total
  • Show code: open your payment code only when the cashier is ready and never send a screenshot of it
  • Mini Programs and in-app checkout may be available at participating merchants, but an unsupported flow does not prove that ordinary QR payment is broken
  • Confirm: read the final status and check the transaction record before leaving

Check current fees, limits, and refunds

The current WeChat Help Center lists a RMB 6,500 single-transaction limit, RMB 50,000 cumulative monthly limit, and RMB 65,000 cumulative annual limit for this international-card route. It also lists no Weixin Pay transaction fee for a single payment of RMB 200 or less and a 3% fee above RMB 200, with the service fee refunded proportionally when a purchase is refunded.

Tencent announced a 2026 benefit for first-time users who link an international card: from the first transaction, international-card processing fees are waived for 90 consecutive days on daily spending up to RMB 1,000. Promotions, account limits, issuer charges, and exchange rates can change, so the amount shown on the live payment page and the card statement controls.

Know the feature limits and keep a fallback

A linked international card is mainly a merchant-payment route. Personal transfers, receiving money, balance top-ups, and red packets may remain unavailable. Set up Alipay as a second wallet, and carry a physical card plus a modest amount of RMB cash.
