PAYMENTS · USING ALIPAY

How to Pay With Alipay in China (2026 Guide)

At most everyday merchants, payment follows one of two patterns: you scan the merchant’s QR code, or the merchant scans your payment code. Knowing which screen to use helps avoid delays at the counter.

Method one: scan the merchant’s QR code

Open Alipay and choose Scan. Point the camera at the merchant’s payment QR code, enter the amount only when the merchant asks you to, then check the merchant name and total before confirming.

  1. Open Scan in Alipay.
  2. Scan the merchant’s payment QR code.
  3. Enter the amount if the payment page requires it.
  4. Check the merchant and total, choose the linked card, and confirm.

Method two: let the merchant scan your payment code

Open Pay or the payment-code screen and present the rotating barcode or QR code to the cashier. Keep the screen private until the cashier is ready, then confirm the completed amount in your own app.

  1. Open the payment-code screen.
  2. Let the cashier scan the code.
  3. Wait for the app’s success message.
  4. Verify the merchant and final amount before leaving.

Know what the linked overseas-card path covers

A supported overseas card linked to Alipay is intended for ordinary purchases from merchants in mainland China. This path generally does not cover personal transfers, receiving money, red packets, wealth management, insurance, or other financial services.

A failure in a mini-program or an unsupported financial feature does not by itself show that the linked card or ordinary merchant checkout is broken. Return to an official merchant QR or payment-code flow, read the exact result, and keep a fallback available.

If the payment fails

A failed transaction may come from card-issuer approval, verification, a merchant channel, a spending limit, connectivity, or the app’s current rules. Read the exact error and separate a failed, pending, or completed payment before trying anything else.

  • Check Alipay’s transaction record and your card issuer before retrying
  • For an account restriction, use in-app Help or the official Alipay Service Center for identity or recovery steps
  • For a card decline, contact the issuer or choose a second linked card only after checking the first result
  • Ask for another official merchant checkout route or use WeChat Pay
  • Use a physical card or RMB cash when necessary

Check the selected card, final cost, and receipt

Before confirming, review the selected card and any wallet service fee shown on the live Alipay screen. The card network and issuer can apply currency conversion or other charges under their own terms; the final card statement controls issuer-side conversion and charges. Keep the Alipay transaction record until the purchase is settled.
