On a standard local internet connection, plan as though Gmail is unavailable. The same preparation matters when your trip depends on Google Search, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Photos or Google Calendar. Actual access can vary by connection, but a traveler should not make an essential booking or check-in depend on it.

Save the information needed for your first days in files that open without Gmail, Google Drive or a live search result. Keep a second copy somewhere you can reach independently from your Google account.
- Download flight, train and hotel confirmations as local files.
- Save hotel names, addresses and telephone numbers in both English and Chinese.
- Export or copy the travel documents and work files you genuinely need.
- Record important contacts outside Gmail and keep one emergency contact on paper.
- Open each file in airplane mode to confirm it is really stored on the device.
Google recommends adding a recovery phone number and a separate recovery email address. If you use two-step verification, Google also supports one-time backup codes for moments when the normal second step is unavailable. Prepare these before travel and keep them private.
- Use a recovery email address that is not the Gmail account you are trying to recover.
- Use a phone number you control and can receive messages on while traveling.
- Store backup codes securely and never share a password, verification code or backup code with a stranger.
- For a work or school Google account, check the organization’s recovery process with the administrator before departure.
No email client is a dependable backup if it still needs to connect to the same unavailable Gmail service. Apple Mail or another email app may show messages already downloaded to the device, but do not assume it can fetch new Gmail messages on a standard mainland connection.
If new email is operationally important, agree on a second contact route with your hotel, tour operator, employer or family before the trip.
Network behavior and service rules can change. Follow local law and the current terms of any connectivity provider; this guide does not promise that a particular roaming, eSIM or VPN connection will make every Google product work.
